Today was supposed to be a post by Puleng. She so graciously gave me the space today because she was as moved by Star Trek as I was. She was even squeezing my hand in certain nail-biting parts of the prequel. I go to prequels with much apprehension because I worry that they are going to somehow taint every thing that I have already seen. I know it’s ridiculous, but if you saw the movie and could follow all those permutations of the present being remixed, by the future being remixed by the present you surely can understand where I’m going.

I can see the criticism of the lack of heavy humanist tones (of the Galactic United Nations kind) that made it so beloved but they were there, albeit subtly and it is a film and not the series. Leonard Nimoy was a surprise!! It’s obvious I haven’t tried too hard to find out what was going to be in the film. He was a perfect symbol of the passing of the baton to what will surely be a new generation of Trekkies. Didn’t you expect the 2 Spocks to blow up when they met? I’m sure there’s something about such things happening when the future and present meet.

I think I was also too young to fully realise what a player Kirk is. The episodes I have seen as an adult did make that obviously clear but I still find that somehow jars with my prepubescent naive recollections. This young Kirk incarnation certainly played the sex god part, Puleng was even talking about how sexy he is on the way back. I might not go with her to such films in future!!

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would really recommend this film to anyone, even if you don’t have a history of the series.
